BNP, Jamaat and NCP leaders unite in human chain demanding stone quarry opening
A human chain program was held in front of the Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar in the city’s Chowhatta area on Tuesday afternoon demanding the reopening of stone quarries. After the human chain, a protest march was held in the city under the banner of the Sylhet District Stone-Related Business Owner-Worker Unity Council. Local leaders of the three political parties participated in it.
The program was attended by Sylhet Metropolitan BNP Acting President Rezaul Hasan Kayes Lodi and General Secretary Imdad Hossain Chowdhury, Jamaat-e-Islami Sylhet Metropolitan Amir Md. Fakhrul Islam and district secretary Joynal Abedin and Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Sylhet district chief coordinator Nazim Uddin and metropolitan chief coordinator Abu Sadek Mohammad Khairul Islam Chowdhury, along with leaders and activists of various levels of the parties were present.
Bangladesh Environment Movement (BAPA) Sylhet General Secretary Abdul Karim Chowdhury Kim told Prothom Alo that influential political figures were behind the stone looting in Sylhet during the previous government. Stone looting took place under the umbrella of former ministers, MPs and district and upazila leaders. Even though the Awami League lost the opportunity to loot after August 5, the looting continues. In the changed situation, allegations of stone looting worth thousands of crores of taka have been made against leaders and activists of various political parties in Sylhet’s stone-state looting in 10 months. In this situation, the participation of leaders of various political parties including BNP in the program organized to demand the opening of stone quarries is undesirable.
